Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Became a Marketer

CAREERI Became a Marketer

Nobody warns you. The courses teach channels — Meta, Google, SEO, email — and then reality teaches you the job is almost none of that. Four years, hundreds of campaigns and one recruitment business of my own later, here's the list I wish someone had handed me on day one.

1. Clients buy outcomes, not channels

No business owner has ever woken up wanting "a Performance Max campaign". They want the phone to ring. The day I stopped selling tactics and started talking about booked calls, every conversation got easier — including the price conversation.

2. The ad is 20%. Follow-up is the other 80%

I've watched average ads print money because the business replied in two minutes — and brilliant ads lose money because leads sat in an inbox until Friday. Most "my ads don't work" is quietly "my follow-up doesn't exist". It's why I build automation into everything now.

3. Reporting is not paperwork — it IS the job

Clients don't see your dashboards, your audiences or your 11pm optimisations. They see the report. A clear, honest weekly report — what we spent, what it made, what's next — is worth more than any single campaign. Silence makes clients imagine the worst; numbers make them stay.

4. You will be five other professions

Part designer, part copywriter, part accountant, part data analyst, part therapist for a founder having a bad month. Marketing sits in the middle of every business problem, so every business problem eventually knocks on your door. Learn to enjoy it or it will eat you.

5. Creative burns out. Systems don't

Motivation is a terrible operations plan. The marketers who last aren't the most inspired — they're the ones with templates, checklists, automations and a swipe file, so a tired Tuesday still ships good work. That lesson built this website, my content engine, and honestly, my career.

If you're starting out

Learn one channel deeply, learn follow-up and reporting like your rent depends on it (it does), and build systems from your first month. The tools will change every year. Those three things won't.

This is the marketer you're hiring.

Outcomes, follow-up systems and honest reporting — that's the whole offer. Book a free audit and see it applied to your business.
